ExpoWe are excited to have a booth promoting our Duck Adoptions at the Live a Better Life Health and Fitness Expo being held on May 23 at the Family Circle Tennis Center, 10 – 5.  There will be so much amazing activity and education that there is sure to be something for everyone of all ages. And it is all FREE. Live music by John Cusatis, fitness demonstrations, health screenings, health food, a Kids Zone, a Tennis Zone, a climbing wall, and a fitness challenge ($10) for all ages and fitness levels. What a great way to spend a Saturday!

5_DSC_1397-XLPat Richards, a member of the Daniel Island Rotary Club and Literacy Chair for Rotary District 7770, was recognized by District Governor Jimmie Williamson at the recent district conference with the Rotary Club Builder Award. Pat led the district wide literacy project this year which culminated in hundreds of books being boxed up at the conference thanks to book drives at many District 7770 Rotary Clubs.

RotaryLiteraryEighth grade Social Studies students at Cainhoy Elementary Middle School are embarking on an exciting adventure into their community’s past – thanks to a special donation of books on the history of the Cainhoy Peninsula provided by the Rotary Club of Daniel Island and the Daniel Island Historical Society. Representatives from both organizations, (Sara Cooper, Beth Bush and Bill Thielfoldt), visited the school on March 7 to deliver 30 copies of the book, entitled “Behind God’s Back: Gullah Memories of Cainhoy, Wando, Huger, Daniel Island and Thomas Island.” The students were each given a personal copy of the book, signed by the author, Herb Frazier. ‪#‎Charleston‬ ‪#‎Rotary7770‬

RotaryPixPlease join us on Wednesday, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, when Daniel Island resident Ed Marinaro will talk about his successful careers in professional football and acting. Ed was a college football star at Cornell where he set over 16 NCAA records, led the nation in rushing in both 1970 and 1971, and was the 1971 recipient of the Maxwell Award and the UPI College Player of the Year. After college, Ed played professional football with the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Jets, and the Seattle Seahawks, and appeared in two Super Bowls. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1991. After leaving football, Ed had a distinguished acting career. He is best know for his role, from 1981 to 1986, as Officer Joe Coffey on the highly-acclaimed Hill Street Blues, a show that received 98 Emmy nominations. He also appeared on Laverne & Shirley and Sisters and in several movies.

The event is at the Daniel Island Club, in the ballroom. Doors open at 6:30 pm, the program starts at 7 pm, and will conclude around 8 pm. Business casual attire is appropriate. There is no charge for the program, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverags.

Alcoholic beverages may be purchsed.

Congratulations to Mike Sudzina, who  was elected by the Rotary Club of Daniel Island to serve as president for the 2015-2016 Rotary Year.  He has been a member of the club for 7 years and has served as Vice President, Membership Chair, Duck Race  Chair and Community Service Chair for the club.  Mike is a graduate of Bucknell University, earned an MBA at Temple University and served in the US Marine Corps.  He was the Director of Professional and Scientific Relations for Procter and Gamble’s Oral Care Division prior to retiring in 2006.  He has also served as Vice President of the American Dental Association Foundation, was Vice President of the American Dental Education Association and was on the boards of visitors of five Dental Schools.  He currently is a volunteer at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum and serves as Chairman of the Board for the USS Yorktown Foundation.  He and his wife Mary moved to Daniel Island in 2006. #Rotary #Rotary7770 #Charleston #DanielIsland

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley reflects on his 40 years at the helm of the Holy City – from SPA to Spoleto, parks to preservation, Hugo to high-tech – as he prepares to retire from the city’s highest public post. Cocktail hour starts at 6:30 and Major Riley will talk at 7:00.

On Wednesday, February 4, 2015, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley will reflect on his forty years in office.  Without a doubt he has been the driving force behind the development of Charleston into the city that we not only know and love, but the city which all of us have chosen as our home.  From the revitalization of the downtown area, to leading the recovery effort in the wake of Hurricane Hugo, snagging the renowned Spoleto arts festival, the annexation of Daniel Island, the construction of the Ravenel Bridge, and the renovation of the Gaillard Center, Mayor Riley has had a vision for the city throughout his years in office and has successfully transformed Charleston into one of the leading cities of the world.  Please join us in saluting Mayor Riley and hearing his thoughts on the remarkable journey he has taken for the past 40 years.
