Jonathan Green, renowned artist famous for his colorful imagery of the Lowcountry rice culture spoke to the Rotary Club of Daniel Island at their “Bring Your Spouse to Rotary” meeting. Jonathan spoke about his life, his work, and his passion for keeping alive the memory of what was accomplished by the many African workers who changed the landscape and economy of South Carolina. He also spoke about this commission to design costumes and sets for the upcoming Spoleto Festival production of Porgy and Bess. The Rotary Club of Daniel Island and the Daniel Island Community Fund moved quickly to provide support to local residents impacted by flooding. Each organization donated $2,500, on October 7th, to East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO). ECCO will direct the money to food, clothing, household, and other support at its newly-established Baldwin-Carson Center in Cainhoy/Huger. On August 26, Rotary District Governor Rod Funderburk addressed the Rotary Club of Daniel Island. Pat Richards, a member of the Daniel Island Rotary Club and Literacy Chair for Rotary District 7770, was recognized by District Governor Jimmie Williamson at the recent district conference with the Rotary Club Builder Award. Pat led the district wide literacy project this year which culminated in hundreds of books being boxed up at the conference thanks to book drives at many District 7770 Rotary Clubs.
Congratulations to Mike Sudzina, who was elected by the Rotary Club of Daniel Island to serve as president for the 2015-2016 Rotary Year. He has been a member of the club for 7 years and has served as Vice President, Membership Chair, Duck Race Chair and Community Service Chair for the club. Mike is a graduate of Bucknell University, earned an MBA at Temple University and served in the US Marine Corps. He was the Director of Professional and Scientific Relations for Procter and Gamble’s Oral Care Division prior to retiring in 2006. He has also served as Vice President of the American Dental Association Foundation, was Vice President of the American Dental Education Association and was on the boards of visitors of five Dental Schools. He currently is a volunteer at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum and serves as Chairman of the Board for the USS Yorktown Foundation. Daniel Island Rotary members delivered 144 Thanksgiving meals to the Cainhoy Community Center. The Community Center identifies families in the Cainhoy area most in need of this support at this time. With the support of Publix Supermarkets, each family received a frozen turkey and staples to provide a meal for eight people.
