The club was very honored to have Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg, also a fellow Rotarian, visit us at our October 4th, 2017 meeting. With so many hot topics that can be discussed as it relates to the Charleston area, Mayor Tecklenburg chose to spend a majority of his time discussing housing and development in and around the city.

With approximately 30 new people moving to the Low Country every single day, keeping up with the growth and affordable housing options is certainly at the top of the priority list for the mayor and city officials. He layed out the city’s plan that will address affordable housing as well as the population of individuals who fall in the “Workforce Housing” demographic. These are individuals who typically earn between 81-120% of the Area Median Income…they earn too much to qualify for affordable housing subsidies, but not enough to afford a home or an apartment.

Recognizing the challenges including the fact that employees such as police officers, firefighters, teachers and service industry workers cannot afford to live and work in the city, Mayor Tecklenburg and the Charleston City Council approved a Bond Resolution in April 2017. The Referendum would be placed on the ballot in November 2017, allowing voters in our community to make a choice on whether they would support the $20m Bond Referendum, which would create the revenue for the creation and and expansion of affordable housing in the Charleston community.
