February 15, 2017 – Daniel Island, SC – He might be only 11 years old, but Jackson Silverman has already enjoyed the feeling of having an entrepreneurial idea come to fruition. Jackson and his family started a nonprofit organization called I Heart Hungry Kids to fight childhood hunger head on.

Jackson and his father Josh visited the Rotary Club of Daniel Island meeting to share this amazing story, and their plans for the future expansion of the project.

In partnership with the Lowcountry Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies program, I Heart Hungry Kids organizes the labor needed to assemble special backpacks full of nutritious food.

Jackson’s idea was to empower kids to help other kids – he described his excitement when the first group of his peers assembled backpacks full of food for kids in need. Since that first event, the idea has grown to reach thousands of kids that may have otherwise gone without.  The backpacks are discretely distributed through Charleston County School District guidance departments each Friday, and the nutritious inside ensure hunger is kept at bay.

Jackson has enjoyed accolades for his initiative including a recent trip to Washington DC and being honored with his own day in Charleston, as proclaimed by City of Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg.

Read more about Jackson and I Heart Hungry Kids on their website, and check out this story that aired recently on Live 5 News. Jackson even performed his own Ted Talk at the 2016 TEDx Charleston event!

Jackson and his family plan to expand the program throughout South Carolina in cooperation with other food banks.
