Josh Whitley is a longtime Berkeley County councilman who has served on the Berkeley County Council since 2015, representing District 2 which includes Daniel Island and the Clements Ferry corridor14. Josh is also a longtime DI resident, and his law firm is located on DI.Josh has been instrumental in several initiatives to improve the quality of life on the island including the medical heliport, road improvements, and the new county park to be located on the northwestern side of Daniel Island. It will encompass approximately 115 acres of land, which was previously owned by the South Carolina State Ports Authority (SPA).In July 2023, Berkeley County Council unanimously approved the purchase of this parcel of land. The deal was finalized in July 2024 for $4 million, marking a significant step towards the creation of this new public space. The project is in its early stages, with land acquisition being a recent milestone.
This park development aligns with Berkeley County's broader environmental initiatives:• Greenbelt Preservation Plan: In August 2024, Berkeley County Council approved a Greenbelt Preservation Plan, which outlines strategies for preserving and creating greenspaces, open spaces, conservation areas, and parks throughout the county.• Community Growth: The new park will serve Daniel Island's growing population, which currently stands at around 11,000 residents and is expected to increase.• Public Access: This project will provide much-needed public access to the waterfront on Daniel Island, enhancing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. This new park project represents a significant addition to Daniel Island's community amenities and reflects the ongoing development and improvement of this relatively young Charleston community.Thank You Josh for a great presentation today and for all your hard work in support of our community!
